Once they've reached it, the reinforcement beacon also lives up to its name and will begin teleporting new troops down to replace your fallen Marines, with a green number displayed over the beacon to show how many more are coming.
Once captured, a beacon becomes a viable Retreat destination your squads will fall back to whichever is nearest to them when you hit the Retreat button. This first mission is largely a tutorial, and the alerts you're receiving are addition information if you wish to read it.īeacons can be captured by any of your infantry units (that is, everyone you have except the Dreadnought). As you play through the first mission, you'll see numerous alerts on the left side of the screen. You'll find your commander and Sergeant Tarkus, along with his Tactical Marines, dropped into a combat zone, with Orks running amok.
Once you've chosen your campaign and named your commander, the game begins. If you know how to play the game, Sergeant is a fair starting point. Attempting the same thing on Primarch will leave your Force Commander a red stain on the grass before you even move past the initial engagement in the tutorial mission. Playing on Recruit, your Force Commander can and will walk on Attack-Move orders across the map, achieving objectives single-handedly and vanquishing mighty foes in seconds. Unlike a skirmish game, the AI controls remain largely the same regardless of the difficulty you choose the difficulty rating affects your enemy's physical statistics, instead. Choose one that's too simple and you'll literally be walking your squads through the missions without anything resembling a challenge, while choosing something too hard will make life extremely difficult for you. While the Force Commander's name is entirely inconsequential, the difficulty rating is crucial to your game. Choose wisely in both neither can be changed once your campaign begins. All you'll do before the fighting begins is name your Force Commander and select the difficulty rating. Choosing to play the campaign in Dawn of War 2 will shoot you into the action very quickly, with little in the way of character establishment or "prep time".
